Benue: Governor Alia Sacks Electoral Commission Chairman
Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has approved the dismissal of the Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC), Dr. John Chen. This decision was communicated by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, following recommendations from the State House of Assembly.
The assembly’s resolution cited Dr. Chen’s alleged lack of sound judgment and failure to act in the public interest. Lawmakers argued that his decisions did not align with the expectations of key stakeholders in the state’s electoral process. The statement from Kula read:
“His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia is in receipt of a communication from the Benue State House of Assembly wherein the Honourable members sent some resolutions to him for further implementation. These resolutions include, amongst others; that the chairman of the Commission, Dr. John Chen, should be removed from office. The Assembly accused the BSIEC chairman of lacking good judgment as to which decisions will appeal to the greater majority of all stakeholders, and also that his actions so far in office fall short of the public interest.”
Governor Alia has accepted the resolutions and directed Dr. Chen to immediately hand over to the Administrative Secretary of the commission.
