Borno State Government Shuts Down Overcrowded Cemeteries Due to Health Concerns
The Borno State Government has announced the closure of two cemeteries in Maiduguri, citing health hazards due to overcrowding. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Mohammed Lawan Abubakar, stated that the Gwange Muslim Cemetery and Old GRA Christian Cemetery would be shut down effective from September 1, 2024.
To address this issue, the government has designated new burial sites for both Muslim and Christian communities. The Muslim community will now use the Dalori Cemetery along Bama Road, while the Christian community will be directed to the Maximum Security Christian Cemetery off Baga Road. Abubakar emphasized that this decision aligns with the state’s development plan to expand the city and ensure safe and adequate burial facilities for all residents.
Additionally, the state government has procured six vehicles to assist the public in transporting corpses to the newly designated burial grounds. The Borno State Government remains committed to providing solutions to ensure the well-being of the community and addressing burial concerns in both the short and long term.
