Civil Society Network Raises Concerns Over Kaduna State Draft Climate Change Policy
The Network of Civil Society in Environment has raised concerns regarding the draft climate change policy for Kaduna State, citing inadequate consultation during its development.
At a technical session held in collaboration with Open Gov Innovation Hub Kaduna and the Kaduna Local Government Accountability Mechanism, the Coordinator of the network, Gloria Bulus, highlighted the lack of consultation with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) during the policy’s development in 2023.
Expressing the importance of participatory governance through the Open Government Partnership, Bulus emphasized the need for broader stakeholder involvement in policy formulation processes within the state.
The review aims to identify gaps, opportunities, strengths, and weaknesses in the draft policy to offer recommendations influencing the document positively. Bulus stressed that the policy required substantial improvements to reflect a genuine depiction of the state’s climate reality and ensure high-quality standards.
Furthermore, Abel Adejor from the Partnership to Engage Reform and Learn underscored the significance of climate change in various sectors, emphasizing the need for multi-sectoral collaboration to address its impact effectively. He highlighted the availability of opportunities in the environmental space, encouraging government, individuals, and CSOs to tap into them for resilience-building, mitigation, and adaptation strategies.
