In an admirable demonstration of compassion and solidarity, the Secretary to the Cross River State Government, Prof. Anthony Owan-Eno, has revealed that the state has secured an additional N500 million to bolster the palliatives committee’s efforts. This financial injection will enable the committee to acquire more essential commodities, providing much-needed relief during these challenging times, partly exacerbated by the removal of petroleum subsidies.

Prof. Owan-Eno unveiled this heartening news through a press statement, showcasing the state’s dedication to supporting its citizens. The distributions of bags of rice are thoughtfully allocated to various groups, ensuring that the widest spectrum of the community benefits:

  • Students: 1000 bags
  • Religious Groups: 800 bags
  • Traditional Rulers: 400 bags
  • Trade Unions: 300 bags
  • Labour Unions: 800 bags
  • Civil Servants: 800 bags
  • Persons Living With Disabilities: 200 bags
  • Motherless Babies Homes: 200 bags
  • Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs): 800 bags
  • Refugees: 800 bags
  • Pensioners: 800 bags
  • Support Groups/IPAC: 1100 bags
  • Security Personnel: 500 bags
  • National Youth Council: 100 bags

The Director-General of the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Ogeyi Odey, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to these distributions. She noted that the agency has already meticulously planned how to cover all 18 Local Government Areas, ensuring that any deserving group not included in the initial list will be accommodated in due course.

Addressing concerns about the security of the state’s warehouses, Director-General Odey reassured the public that measures have been taken to safeguard the supplies. These warehouses, damaged during the EndSARS protests in 2020, have been fortified with substantial iron doors, guaranteeing the protection of the stored essentials.

Furthermore, she emphatically denied any pressure from government officials, traditional leaders, or politicians to divert the palliatives. She explained that her sole directive comes from the State Governor, who has approved the distribution plan. Any group not yet included can communicate directly with the Governor, ensuring fairness and transparency in the process.

Cross River State’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens shines as a beacon of hope and compassion, reaffirming its dedication to helping those in need during challenging times.
