In a bid to promote fairness and legality in the transportation sector, Pastor Ekpeyong Cobham, the Commissioner for Transportation in Cross River State, issued a strong warning to the leadership of the state branch of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN). During a stakeholders’ meeting held in Calabar, Cobham highlighted the necessity for RTEAN to cease the collection of unauthorized ‘welfare dues’ from minibus drivers, emphasizing the potential legal consequences.

Presenting the government’s stance at the gathering, Cobham emphasized crucial topics concerning the transportation sub-sector, such as ticketing, road signage, and the surge in associations. Addressing the contentious issue of drivers’ welfare, he referenced specific sections of RTEAN’s constitution, expressing concern that the union’s actions diverged from its own rules.

Asserting the government’s commitment to upholding peace in the state, Cobham stressed that any disruption caused by groups or individuals would be met with resistance. He reaffirmed the Bassey Otu-led administration’s dedication to restoring tranquility and stability in the transportation sector while ensuring compliance with established laws and regulations.
