Cross River Government Pledges to Revive Leboku International Festival
The Cross River State Government has committed to revitalizing the annual Leboku New Yam International Festival, a significant cultural event for the Yakurr people. Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Hon. Chief Robert Abubakar Ewa, announced this during visits to various Obol Lopon of Yakurr communities, including Ugep, Ekori, Assiga, Inyima, Nko, Mkpani, Agoi, and Idomi.
The Leboku Festival, which showcases the agricultural wealth of the Yakurr people, aims to promote unity and boost economic activity in the region. Commissioner Ewa emphasized the importance of inclusive participation and encouraged each community to contribute representatives for the 2024 festival planning committee.
Permanent Secretary Pastor (Mrs) Eme Affia underscored the need for peace and unity among the Yakurr communities to enhance the festival’s success and preserve cultural heritage. The Obol Lopon expressed their past grievances but welcomed the government’s renewed efforts and promised to participate in this year’s festival.
