Cross River Governor Otu Signs N296bn 2024 ‘People First’ Budget, Prioritizes Social Equity
Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has signed into law the N296.985 billion 2024 budget, titled the “People First” budget, underscoring its focus on social equity and inclusivity. During the ceremony held in his office, Governor Otu highlighted that the budget consists of N180 billion for capital expenditure and N116 billion for recurrent expenditure.
Emphasizing the commitment to support vulnerable communities, the Governor highlighted an increase of about N96 billion from the initially submitted budget, specifically directed towards providing better support for people living with disabilities. Governor Otu stressed that this allocation aims to ensure improved access to healthcare, education, and employment tailored to the capabilities of this group.
“This budgetary increase reflects our moral obligation to create a more balanced society by addressing the needs of special demographics,” Governor Otu explained. “It stands as a testament to our values, ensuring access to critical services and opportunities.”
Additionally, Governor Otu highlighted augmented provisions in the budget for gratuity payments, debt services, counterpart funds, nutrition activities, social protection, climate change, and gender-responsive budgeting, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to holistic development.
