Cross River Governor Stresses Peace Amid Obong Stool Dispute

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State cautioned against actions and statements that might disrupt the peace established by the settled matter of the Obong of Calabar stool. At the 12th Utomo Obong festival, he emphasized the state government’s stand following a Supreme Court ruling, urging respect for the established position to maintain tranquility in the state.

While acknowledging the right to seek legal redress, the Governor firmly stated the government’s intolerance toward insinuations and provocative remarks potentially endangering the state’s peace. He underscored the significance of supporting those entrusted with power, affirming the government’s commitment to partner with the Obong of Calabar’s palace for effective governance under a peaceful atmosphere and consistent policy implementation.

Governor Otu praised Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, the 78th Efik monarch, highlighting his role in unifying Efik principalities and promoting cultural preservation and development. He commended the ruler’s peaceful approach amid challenges to the throne, acknowledging the palace’s efforts to foster peace among the Efiks and Calabar residents.

Additionally, he assured the construction of a fitting palace for the Obong, declaring the administration’s dedication to the region’s progress.
