Cross River State’s Initiative for Food Security
Erasmus Ekpang, the Commissioner for Information in Cross River State, has announced the government’s comprehensive plan to ensure food security in the state. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar, Ekpang outlined the various measures being taken to support farmers and enhance agricultural productivity.
1. Support for Farmers: The government is committed to providing adequate support to farmers by supplying them with essential inputs and implements. This support includes fertilizers, seedlings, tractors, and assistance with land preparation.
2. Subsidized Inputs: Fertilizers will be sold to farmers at a subsidized rate to make them more affordable. Additionally, farmers will have access to soft loans to further facilitate their agricultural activities.
3. Transition to Commercial Farming: The government aims to transition farmers from subsistence farming to commercial agriculture. This transition will enable farmers to increase their productivity and income levels.
4. Procurement of Tractors: The government has approved the procurement of 108 tractors, which will be distributed to youths across the 196 wards in the state. Each ward will receive six tractors to support agricultural activities.
5. Land Preparation Assistance: Farmers will receive assistance with land preparation to enable them to cultivate larger areas. This assistance aims to increase the efficiency and productivity of farming operations.
6. Soil Analysis: The government has conducted soil analysis across the state to determine the suitability of different crops for cultivation in specific areas. This initiative will help farmers make informed decisions about crop selection.
7. Commercial Agriculture Development Fund: To address the challenges of accessing credit facilities, the government has established a N30 billion Commercial Agriculture Development Fund. This fund, guaranteed by the state government and managed by a consortium of banks, aims to support farmers in transitioning to commercial farming and boost the agricultural value chain in the state.
8. AfDB Catalytic Funding: Cross River State stands to benefit from the US$540 million catalytic funding provided by the African Development Bank (AfDB) to support inclusive and sustainable agro-industrial development in Nigeria. This funding will further enhance food security and employment opportunities in the state.
The government’s initiatives underscore its commitment to promoting agricultural development, enhancing food security, and improving the livelihoods of farmers in Cross River State.
