The Ekiti State Government has initiated the desiltation of drainages in Ado, Ikere, and Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Areas as part of its ongoing efforts to mitigate flooding. The exercise, officially flagged off in Ado-Ekiti, is a significant component of the state’s comprehensive flood and erosion control strategy.

Erelu Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, the State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, expressed her appreciation to Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property. She highlighted that the government has invested over N500 million in these critical initiatives, covering more than 22,903 meters of drainage across various communities.

Moreover, reports from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency have indicated that Ekiti State is not expected to experience flash flooding between January and July 2024, thanks to these proactive measures.

The Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, also underscored the importance of maintaining a clean environment and encouraged residents to cooperate with the government by properly disposing of waste. He emphasized that using designated waste bins and avoiding the dumping of waste in drains are crucial to ensuring the effectiveness of the state’s waste management system.

This initiative reflects the government’s dedication to creating a safer, more hygienic environment for all residents, while also addressing the potential risks posed by climate change.
