In a bid to curb Kalare and reduce youth restiveness in Gombe State, Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Adamu Inuwa Pantami, reveals the government’s focus on de-radicalizing repentant political thugs who surrendered their arms. Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s commitment to their reintegration into society emphasizes a friendly and rehabilitative approach.

The commissioner underscores the importance of monitoring the movements of the engaged repentant youths, preventing a relapse into their previous activities. He urges the public to embrace and support them, emphasizing the need for counseling and understanding.

Furthermore, in a move to reconnect youths with society, the Ministry of Youths and Sports Development plans to reactivate neglected sports like athletics, basketball, volleyball, and traditional sports. This initiative aims to divert the attention of the youth away from crimes, fostering a healthier engagement with sports activities.

In a separate development, Gombe Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) advocate for a credible local government poll. Executive Secretary of Alliance for Credible Elections, Mma Odi, emphasizes the importance of the neutrality of the Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission (GOSIEC) in ensuring free, fair, and credible polls. Odi suggests that independent electoral commissions will contribute to good governance and rapid development at the local government level.

The GOSIEC’s scheduled local government elections on April 27, 2024, is seen as an opportunity for transparent and credible polls. Odi calls for empowerment of GOSIEC to conduct credible elections, encouraging political, religious, and traditional leaders to take ownership of the electoral process. The CSOs express their commitment to monitoring and ensuring an enabling environment for credible local government elections, emphasizing the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in achieving this goal.
