Government Initiatives Addressing Calabar Port Challenges

The Executive Secretary and CEO of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Barr. Akutah Pius Ukeyima, announced significant strides in addressing challenges hindering the optimal utilization of the Calabar Port. Speaking at a seminar focused on agricultural exports through the port, Barr. Ukeyima highlighted government efforts to enhance port efficiency and infrastructure.

Acknowledging existing challenges such as shallow approach channels and decaying infrastructure, Barr. Ukeyima assured stakeholders of the government’s commitment to transforming the port into a hub for agricultural exports. He emphasized the importance of the blue economy in driving economic growth and outlined strategies to overcome operational hurdles.

Zonal Director South-South Zone, Glory E. Onojedo, underscored the strategic significance of the Calabar Port for agricultural exports, reaffirming the Nigerian Shippers Council’s dedication to facilitating seamless trade operations. She pledged support for initiatives aimed at improving port efficiency and promoting export activities.

In a collaborative effort to address concerns raised by stakeholders, participants at the seminar issued a seven-point communique calling for infrastructure improvements, streamlined taxes, and enhanced cargo-handling equipment. They urged relevant authorities to attract liner vessels to the port, further positioning Calabar as a preferred destination for agricultural exports.
