Governor AbdulRazaq is Committed to Achieving a Clean and Hygienic Environment
The Kwara State government, under the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, is committed to achieving a clean and hygienic environment.
Recognizing the importance of cleanliness in promoting health and well-being, the government has taken proactive steps through the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) and the Ministry of Environment to ensure a clean and tidy state.
The government enacted the Environmental Protection Agency Law in 1992, establishing KWEPA to promote a safe and healthy environment for the people of Kwara State. The monthly environmental sanitation exercise has become a routine, imposing heavy sanctions on violators. Recently, the government flagged off the evacuation of illegal dumpsites in Ilorin, emphasizing the importance of a clean environment across the State of Harmony.
Commissioner for Environment, Shehu Ndanusa Usman, reiterated the government’s commitment to sustain a clean and hygienic environment, cautioning against indiscriminate waste dumping. Additionally, a project site for a recycling plant in Offa was handed over to a contractor, showcasing efforts towards effective waste management and attracting private sector partnerships.
The Deputy Governor, Mr. Kayode Alabi, spearheaded the stakeholders’ engagement meeting organized by the State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), urging traditional rulers and stakeholders to combat open defecation. The government pledged support and policies to address this public health issue.
However, during a recent evacuation exercise, there were instances of resistance and attempted assaults on ministry officers, highlighting the persistent challenge of street begging despite government interventions aimed at supporting the physically challenged and vulnerable in the state. The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps intervened to maintain order during the exercise.
