In response to a fire incident at one of the girls’ hostels in Yobe State University on the evening of February 13, 2024, Governor Mai Mala Buni swiftly intervened to ensure the safety and dignity of affected students. Despite the complete destruction of the hostel, which housed approximately 128 legal occupants and additional students, Governor Buni’s administration took immediate action.
Governor Buni, represented by his Deputy and accompanied by key officials, visited the scene to commiserate with the affected students and university management. Emphasizing the importance of dignified re-accommodation, the governor called on the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide immediate support.
Fortunately, there were no casualties, and all 16 students treated at the hospital were discharged on the same night. SEMA, under the leadership of Dr. Goje Mohammed, swiftly assessed a temporary relocation site provided by the university and delivered essential items for the students’ safety and well-being.
As of 11 PM on February 13, 2023, SEMA had mobilized and provided crucial supplies, ensuring the temporary re-accommodation of the affected students in a safe environment.
