Governor Nwifuru Attributes Absence of #EndHunger Protests in Ebonyi to Youth Support
Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has attributed the absence of the recent #EndHunger protests in the state to the youth’s confidence in his administration’s efforts, which he described as “perfect.” However, he also issued a warning to local government chairpersons and coordinators of development centres against sabotaging government contracts and diverting empowerment initiatives.
During a church service at the Government House Chapel in Abakaliki on Sunday, Governor Nwifuru stressed the importance of community leaders working closely with their constituents. He urged town unions and other key players in community development to supervise local projects diligently to ensure they comply with government specifications.
“If you are a coordinator or a local government chairman and you live in Abakaliki without frequently visiting your village, you should not expect people to follow you,” the governor said. “You must prioritize the needs of the people, particularly our youths who require your attention.”
Governor Nwifuru set clear expectations for project execution, stating that coordinators should manage projects of at least N10 million monthly, while chairpersons are expected to handle projects worth at least N20 million each month.
The governor also commended the youths of Ebonyi for not joining the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests, interpreting their decision as a sign of support for his administration.
“They didn’t protest because we are perfect. Their restraint encourages us to do more, and we, as government officials, must meet that challenge,” he declared, emphasizing the need for officials to exhibit a sense of ownership in managing public utilities and ensuring that the benefits of empowerment initiatives reach the youth.
