Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has taken a monumental step towards sustainable development with the launch of the Barefoot Renewable Energy Academy at the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) in Osara. This groundbreaking initiative, the first of its kind in Nigeria, aims to combat poverty, illiteracy, disempowerment, and gender inequality by providing urban and rural households with access to sustainable solar electricity.

Governor Ododo, during the launch on Saturday, described the academy as a people-centered project that aligns with the state’s commitment to sustainable development. He emphasized that the initiative is designed to be scalable at the national level, furthering Nigeria’s progress toward economic growth and reduced inequalities.

Highlighting the academy’s impact, Governor Ododo stated, “This project will not only address energy scarcity but also promote clean and renewable energy, thereby empowering marginalized communities, with a particular focus on achieving gender equality.” He expressed confidence that the Barefoot Renewable Energy Academy will contribute to creating decent jobs, enhancing economic growth, and improving the quality of education in the state.

Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, commended the project, describing it as a crucial step towards innovation and bridging the manpower gap in renewable energy. He also announced the establishment of a Renewable Energy Center in Kogi State as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.

The Vice Chancellor of CUSTECH, Prof. Abdurrahman Asipita, lauded Governor Ododo for bringing significant projects to the university, noting that this is the second federal project to be implemented at the institution. Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, highlighted that the academy, the first of its kind in Africa, is poised to drive innovation in renewable energy technologies.

Dr. Wemi Jones, Commissioner for Education, praised the project as a reflection of Kogi State’s strong commitment to education, with the state allocating 30% of its budget to the sector, surpassing UNESCO recommendations. The Barefoot Renewable Energy Academy is set to play a pivotal role in addressing power issues, creating job opportunities, and fostering sustainable development across Kogi State and beyond.
