Governor Otu Unveils Over 2,000 Ghost Pensioners
In a commendable effort to restore financial integrity, Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has exposed over 2,000 ghost pensioners on the state payroll. This revelation is part of a comprehensive audit initiated by the Governor, aiming to cleanse the system of pension fraud.
The Chief Press Secretary, Nsa Gill, announced the successful audit, which led to the removal of these fictitious names from both state and local government payrolls. With the completion of this exercise, the Governor has approved N10 billion for the payment of gratuities, set to commence in August 2024.
A committee, chaired by the Secretary to the State Government and comprising executives from the State and Local Government Pension Unions, has been tasked with developing a payment strategy. This initiative reflects the Governor’s dedication to fulfilling his promise of settling the gratuity backlog from 2014 and ensuring that retirees receive their rightful benefits.
Governor Otu’s decisive action highlights his administration’s commitment to transparency and the welfare of public servants in Cross River State.
