Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji of Ekiti State has approved a 50% subsidy on improved oil palm, cocoa, and cashew seedlings for distribution to farmers during this planting season. This initiative aims to rejuvenate and enhance tree crop production in the state.

State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, announced that this move is part of the Oyebanji administration’s strategic efforts to create employment, generate wealth, and restore Ekiti State’s historical prominence as a leading cocoa producer. The scheme focuses on replacing aged trees and those lost to bush burning with improved seedlings that have shorter gestation periods. The government also plans to support farmers with agrochemicals to combat fungi diseases and pests, ultimately improving yields.

Boluwade noted that the international cocoa market is thriving, with prices reaching $10,000 per metric tonne. He encouraged both legacy and new farmers to participate in the scheme and benefit from the program. Interested farmers are advised to contact the Tree Crops Department for payment details as outlined in distributed flyers.
