Governor Sanwo-Olu and Dr. Julius Marcus Garvey Jnr. to Attend ‘Lagos Door of Return’
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Dr. Julius Marcus Garvey Jnr., the son of renowned civil rights leader, Marcus Garvey, are set to be distinguished guests at this year’s Diaspora Festival, known as the ‘Lagos Door of Return.’ The festival, now in its fourth year, is organized by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) in collaboration with the Lagos State government.
The ‘Lagos Door of Return’ festival holds significance as it commemorates the history of the slave trade in Nigeria and showcases the tourism potential of the state to a global audience.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NIDCOM, announced at a press conference that the event, scheduled for October 21, will include visits to historical sites, especially in the Badagry area of Lagos.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, as the chief host of the one-day festival, will symbolically open the ‘door of return’ to prosperity, signifying a reconnection to the homeland. Dr. Julius Marcus Garvey Jnr., making his first visit to this part of the world, will serve as the Special Guest of Honour, adding historical significance to the event. Dabiri-Erewa explained that the ‘Door of Return’ event signifies a spiritual, emotional, and physical reconnection for those who were taken as slaves over 400 years ago. It serves as a heartfelt welcome and recognition of their royal heritage
