Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring safety in markets, vowing decisive action against reckless behavior following the devastating fire at Docemo Market on Lagos Island. During a meeting with the leadership of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), led by Director-General Mrs. Zubaida Umar, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed appreciation for NEMA’s prompt response to the disaster.

While commending the efforts of first responders in containing the inferno, Governor Sanwo-Olu lamented the “reckless handling of flammable materials” in the market, which exacerbated the situation. Despite timely intervention, obstruction along narrow streets hindered firefighters from accessing the source of the fire, resulting in extensive damage to property.

The Governor emphasized the need for traders to prioritize safety measures and refrain from actions that endanger lives and property. He announced plans to take decisive measures to curb such reckless tendencies in the future, stressing the importance of accountability and responsibility among market stakeholders.

In the aftermath of the fire, the State Government initiated an enumeration process to assess the extent of damage and support affected traders in rebuilding their businesses. Governor Sanwo-Olu assured collaboration with NEMA to ensure effective support for those affected by the disaster.

Meanwhile, NEMA Director-General Mrs. Zubaida Umar pledged increased advocacy and sensitization on fire safety measures, particularly in densely populated markets, to mitigate the risk of future emergencies. The visit underscored solidarity with the State Government and appreciation for the efforts of first responders in managing the crisis.
