Governor Sanwo-Olu Vows Justice for Attackers of Lagos BRT Bus
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has strongly condemned the recent attack on a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus by hoodlums who robbed passengers in broad daylight, assuring residents that those responsible will be brought to justice.
Speaking through Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, during an X Space discussion on the topic “Vandalism of Public Facilities: The Role of Residents and Government,” Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his deep concern over the rising acts of vandalism and criminality in the state. He reaffirmed that security agents are actively pursuing the culprits involved in the attack, stating, “These actions will have consequences, and the perpetrators will face the full weight of the law.”
The governor’s administration has been actively addressing the issue of vandalism in Lagos, with Omotoso outlining the alarming trend of public property being destroyed or stolen for criminal purposes. He cited the removal of electric poles, manhole covers, and the destruction of concrete structures as examples of these unlawful acts, stressing that such behavior undermines the state’s efforts to provide a comfortable living environment for its residents.
Omotoso urged Lagosians to take greater responsibility for public facilities and to report suspicious activities to authorities. He emphasized the need for collective vigilance in protecting the state’s assets, noting that Lagos, as a rapidly growing hub, requires all its residents to contribute positively to maintaining order and security.
Responding to audience inquiries, Omotoso pointed to Section 339 of the Lagos State Criminal Code, which deals with vandalism and stipulates penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment. He lamented that many incidents go unreported, but assured Lagosians that the government is committed to ensuring that offenders are held accountable.
A participant, Nelson Ekujimi, suggested the introduction of a whistle-blower reward system to further encourage citizens to report vandalism. Omotoso supported the idea, proposing that public recognition by Governor Sanwo-Olu could serve as an incentive for whistle-blowers, reinforcing the administration’s zero-tolerance policy on vandalism and criminal behavior in Lagos.
The recent BRT bus attack has further highlighted the urgency of the government’s ongoing efforts to tackle vandalism and ensure that Lagos remains a safe and secure environment for all. Governor Sanwo-Olu remains committed to upholding the law and ensuring that justice is served in this and other similar cases.
