Governor Yahaya Explains Decision Against Imposing Curfew Amid Protests
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has explained his decision not to impose a curfew during the recent hunger protests to avoid further hardship for the people. The peaceful protest, which began as a demonstration against hunger, was unfortunately hijacked by hoodlums who damaged public and private properties on August 1.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson on August 2, Governor Yahaya emphasized his administration’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and maintaining law and order. “We are not against peaceful protest. Democracy and our laws grant the right to express oneself,” he stated. However, he condemned the actions of the hoodlums that contradicted democratic principles and violated the law.
Governor Yahaya assured that while the government supports peaceful demonstrations and the police are prepared to protect protesters exercising their constitutional rights, any actions threatening the state’s stability would not be tolerated. “We cannot allow the breakdown of law and order,” he reaffirmed, highlighting the importance of preserving peace in Gombe.
