The Kaduna State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to promoting exclusive breastfeeding as a vital strategy in reducing infant and child mortality. Speaking during the 2024 World Breastfeeding Week press briefing, Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Balarabe emphasized the administration’s focus on breastfeeding as a cornerstone of child health and development.

Despite the recorded drop in early breastfeeding initiation from 35.9% to 13%, according to the 2021 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, Dr. Balarabe reassured citizens that the government is taking bold steps to reverse this trend. Initiatives such as deploying qualified healthcare providers, enhancing primary healthcare facilities, providing necessary vaccines, and approving six months of paid maternity leave are designed to support breastfeeding mothers.

Dr. Balarabe further praised Governor Uba Sani’s leadership, particularly in addressing insecurity across the North-West Zone, which she believes will create safer environments for mothers to breastfeed their children. “Breast milk is essential for a baby’s survival and development. Our efforts in human capital development will only bear fruit if our babies are healthy and thriving,” she noted.

She highlighted the importance of colostrum, the first milk produced by mothers, calling it the “most potent natural immune booster” and encouraged mothers to provide it immediately after delivery. Additionally, the state has set up nutrition corners and crèches in government offices to further assist working mothers.

As Kaduna continues its drive for a healthier population, the government’s support for exclusive breastfeeding exemplifies its dedication to building a strong foundation for future generations. Dr. Balarabe concluded with a call to action: “Let us all come together to close the gap and ensure that every child in Kaduna State receives the vital nourishment they need through breastfeeding.”
