Kogi State Government Distributes Tractors to Erosion-Prone Communities

In a strategic move to enhance food production and address the challenges of low agricultural output, the Kogi State Government has distributed hand-held tractors to farming communities across the three Senatorial Districts of the state. This initiative, facilitated through the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project, targets communities where gully erosion intervention works are currently ongoing.

The distribution aims to empower local farmers by providing them with the necessary tools to sustain agricultural activities, even after the completion of ongoing projects. A total of 300 farmers, divided among 30 Community Interest Groups (CIGs) across the districts, are set to benefit from this initiative. Each CIG received a hand-held tractor, which is particularly advantageous for maneuvering between trees in agroforestry ventures, thereby increasing the land area cultivated and resulting in more substantial harvests.

Speaking at the distribution event, the Project Coordinator for Kogi ACReSAL, Chief (Barr.) Ladi Ahmed Jatto-OON, represented by Mahmud Suleiman Obansa, emphasized the importance of proper maintenance of the equipment. She highlighted that this effort not only supports current beneficiaries but also lays the groundwork for extending similar benefits to other communities in the future.

This initiative underscores the Kogi State Government’s commitment to boosting agricultural productivity and ensuring the sustainability of its erosion control projects, thereby contributing to the overall economic development of the state.
