In a significant step towards improving child health and reducing infant mortality, the Kwara State Government has launched two pivotal documents aimed at promoting exclusive breastfeeding, particularly in the first 1,000 days of a child’s life. This initiative is part of the state’s broader commitment to enhancing nutrition among babies, pregnant women, and nursing mothers.

The launch, which took place at the State Ministry of Health headquarters in Ilorin, was presided over by Governor Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam. The Governor emphasized that these documents will play a crucial role in supporting mothers and infants by providing essential vitamins and minerals, thereby reducing the incidence of malnutrition.

The Governor highlighted that this initiative aligns with this year’s World Breastfeeding Week theme, “Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All,” and underscores the state’s dedication to fostering a healthier future for its citizens.

First Lady of Kwara State, Ambassador Professor Olufolake AbdulRazaq, also spoke at the event, noting that the new policy will create an enabling environment for mothers to breastfeed their babies at workplaces, health facilities, and within their communities. She assured that mothers and caregivers will receive further training on hygiene, complementary feeding, and regular monitoring of children’s growth and development.

Adding to the discussions, the Commissioner for Health, represented by Permanent Secretary Hajia Afusat Ibrahim, announced that the state had already approved a six-month maternity leave for women. This policy is expected to encourage more mothers to engage in exclusive breastfeeding, thereby improving child health outcomes.

Hon. Rasaq Owolabi, Chairman of the House Committee on Health and Environment, urged all relevant ministries, departments, and agencies to utilize allocated funds efficiently to complement the government’s efforts in healthcare delivery.

The event was attended by various stakeholders in the health sector and community leaders across Kwara State, marking a significant milestone in the state’s ongoing efforts to promote public health and well-being.
