Kwara State Launches Free Summer Digital Coding Class for Public School Students
The Kwara State Government has initiated a free Summer Digital Coding class for public secondary school students across the state, starting on Monday. This forward-thinking program aims to equip students with essential digital skills to ensure they can compete globally.
Special Assistant to the Governor on Digital Innovation, Hon. Kayode Ishola, emphasized the state’s commitment to digital literacy during the flag-off ceremony at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School in Ilorin. He noted that the program is designed to run for six weeks across six centers in the three senatorial districts, targeting students aged 11 to 15.
“The government understands that for the students to have a competitive edge globally, they need to have digital skills, especially now that external exams like JAMB, WAEC, and NECO are computer-based,” Ishola stated. The first two weeks of the program will focus on digital literacy for beginners, followed by advanced coding and digital skills.
The initiative is organized by the Office of the Special Assistant to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Digital Innovation. Other training centers include Government Secondary School Afon, Ansarul Islam Junior Secondary School in Gure, Etsu Maman Saba Junior Secondary School in Batapan, Government Secondary School Omuaran, and Offa Grammar School.
Dr. Adetola Salahu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Policy Formulation, and Human Capital Development, highlighted the program’s potential to enhance critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. “We are equipping them so that they will be able to compete with their global counterparts and for them to be able to help us solve some of the challenges we are facing in the country,” she said.
Queen Elizabeth School Principal, Hajia Habibat, praised the government for the initiative, which engages students productively during the holiday season. Participants like Yusuf Ibrahim and Muhammad Ayisat expressed gratitude to the state government for the opportunity to gain digital skills, promising to use their knowledge to contribute to national development.
The Kwara State Government’s heavy investment in technology-driven programs like KwaraLEARN underscores its dedication to building students’ capacity in ICT, ensuring they are not left behind in the digital age.
