Kwara State Prioritizes Child Welfare with Inauguration of Child Rights Committee
In a significant move towards safeguarding children’s rights across the 16 local government areas, Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, inaugurated the Child Rights Implementation Committee. Emphasizing the administration’s commitment to women empowerment and the welfare of Kwara’s children, the Governor urged the committee to execute its statutory duties diligently.
Represented by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Saadat Modibbo Kawu, Governor AbdulRasaq stressed the importance of upholding the Child Rights Law and highlighted the need for parents and guardians to actively engage in monitoring their children’s academic progress and behavioral development.
Dr. Wilfred Mamah of UNICEF commended the state government for this initiative and urged swift action to address prevalent issues such as Female Genital Mutilation, out-of-school children, and the rise in numbers at correctional centers. The Committee’s role in networking and ensuring child rights protection was emphasized to tackle these urgent challenges.
The inauguration of this committee, aligned with UNICEF guidelines, showcases the government’s commitment to the welfare of women and girls, as stated by the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Olaitan Buraimoh. Additionally, the Attorney General, Barrister Senior Ibrahim Sulyman, urged the committee to prioritize the children’s best interests to fulfill the noble intentions behind its formation.
