Lagos Raising Young Farmers to Replace Aging Ones
The Lagos State Government has successfully completed a one-month intensive training for youths in an agricultural entrepreneurship program. In a statement on its X handle on Sunday, the government revealed that the participants pledged their commitment to contributing to food security in Lagos.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration remains committed to improving food production and sustaining livelihoods. “The need to replace our aging farming population with youth trained in modern farming techniques towards improved food production, job creation, and sustained livelihoods remains very key,” the statement noted.
Participants of the Lagos Agripreneurship Programme (LAP 20), after their intensive training, assured their willingness to contribute towards ensuring a food-secured Lagos. Last week, Governor Sanwo-Olu called on agro-food companies to collaborate with the government to reduce food costs in the state. During a courtesy visit from the senior management team of Olam Agri Nigeria Ltd., led by Managing Director Anil Nair, the governor emphasized the importance of food security.
“There is no better security these days than food. Today being the first day of August, you can see in the streets of Nigeria, there’s some sort of hunger protest. How I wish that you and I, after this meeting, will make a broadcast that food prices have gone down by 25 per cent; it will be great news for both of us,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated.
