Lagos State Affirms Firm Resolve in Environmental Law Enforcement
Reiterating its unwavering commitment to enforcing environmental laws, the Lagos State Government affirmed its stance to uphold public interest for the greater good of residents. Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this assertion during an appearance on Arise TV Breakfast program “The Morning Show,” addressing recent developments regarding the removal of structures on drainage setbacks.
Wahab clarified that the removal of structures along the Odo Iya Alaro River in Mende Villa Estate, Soluyi, Ifako, Arowojobe under System 1, though challenging, was imperative for public safety. He highlighted extensive consultations with property owners since 2021 and emphasized governance’s responsibility to make tough decisions for collective benefits.
Acknowledging climate change’s realities, Wahab underscored the importance of resilient infrastructure to mitigate risks, citing examples from other regions. Regarding compensations, he assured that each request would be considered on merit, emphasizing empathy and government support for affected residents.
