Lagos State Government Issues Seven-Day Ultimatum to Owners of Illegal Structures in Lekki and Environs
The Lagos State Government has issued a seven-day contravention notice to owners of buildings situated along Orchid Road, Agungi, Ajiran, Conservation Road, and Osapa, particularly those encroaching upon the Ikota River channel.
This notice, announced by the commissioner for environment, Tokunbo Wahab, and the Special Adviser on the environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, follows an extensive inspection tour to assess compliance with the approved seven-meter setback on both sides of the channel.
The government stressed the importance of adhering to the state’s drainage master plan to prevent property demolition. Commissioner Wahab emphasized the government’s determination to enforce the law and reclaim drainage setbacks after the expiration of the issued notices.
Concerns were raised about distortions affecting the natural habitat along the drainage channels, impacting the Nigerian Conservation Foundation and Orchid Road. The state government had previously reduced the setback alignment from seven to six meters after discussions with property owners to minimize the number of affected structures.
