The Lagos State Government has called upon Cooperative Societies in the State to take a proactive role in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution under the new electricity law.

At a symposium themed “Venturing into the Power Sector: the Electric Cooperative Model,” Commissioner Folashade Ambrose-Medebem highlighted Lagos’ preparedness for power sector deregulation through the establishment of the State Electricity Board.

Encouraging over 3,000 active Cooperative Societies with an annual financial turnover exceeding N70 billion, she emphasized their potential to contribute significantly to delivering essential public utilities and enhancing members’ quality of life.

Engr. Abiola Olowu, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy and Mineral Resources, advocated for increased Cooperative Societies’ involvement in the Power Sector, citing success stories such as the establishment of an electric cooperative serving multiple communities in the Lekki area.

The symposium, hosted by the Lagos State Cooperative College, aimed to bolster the cooperative movement’s investment in the power sector value chain, ensuring improved electricity access for Nigerians and enhancing member well-being within the purview of the law. Leaders stressed the significance of electric cooperatives in providing rural electricity and fostering community development in Nigeria.
