LASG and FRSC Strengthen Collaboration for Improved Traffic Management in Lagos
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing traffic management across Lagos State through a strengthened partnership. This collaborative effort was highlighted during a recent meeting between LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, and FRSC Zonal Commanding Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Jonathan Owoade, at LASTMA Headquarters in Oshodi, Lagos.
Mr. Bakare-Oki welcomed the initiative, emphasizing LASTMA’s dedication to working closely with the FRSC to alleviate traffic congestion, promote public awareness, and enforce traffic regulations. He expressed confidence that this partnership will lead to significant improvements for road users in Lagos.
Highlighting the agency’s efforts, Mr. Bakare-Oki revealed that from January to June 2024, a total of 9,370 vehicles were penalized for traffic violations, with 50% of these being commercial buses. All cases were prosecuted in the Lagos State Mobile Court under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.
He also mentioned several recent initiatives aimed at bolstering road safety and traffic management, including the launch of a toll-free call center, a Walk-In Complaint Centre, a Whistle Blower App, and upgrades to the Agency’s website and the Planning, Research and Statistics Department.
Assistant Corps Marshal Jonathan Owoade reaffirmed the FRSC’s role as Nigeria’s leading agency in road traffic management and safety, emphasizing their commitment to eradicating road traffic crashes and creating a safer motoring environment. He also highlighted the newly introduced vehicle number plates, designed to enhance security with visibility from up to 50 meters away.
Both agencies agreed on the importance of a special public enlightenment campaign to educate motorists on the significance of road signs. The meeting was attended by senior management teams from both LASTMA and the FRSC, marking a new chapter in their collaborative efforts to ensure safer roads in Lagos.
