Leboku Festival to Enhance Yakurr’s Cultural Economy – CRSG
Mr. Effiong Ekpenyong, Special Adviser on Events Management in the Governor’s Office of Cross River State, has emphasized that the Leboku International New Yam Festival will continue to bolster the cultural economy of Yakurr communities. Speaking at a press briefing in Obol Opon’s Palace in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area, Ekpenyong highlighted the festival’s role in Governor Bassey Edet Otu’s “people first” policy, which drives the administration’s efforts towards people-oriented projects.
Ekpenyong praised the festival’s pioneers and assured that his office would collaborate with stakeholders to enhance the event’s global appeal. He also expressed gratitude to national and state assembly members, tourism clusters, and other contributors for their support.
The festival’s 2024 edition promises to be a landmark event, with an emphasis on cultural heritage and economic impact. The unveiling of the festival’s logo and theme was noted as a step towards establishing a strong brand identity. The Commissioner for Tourism, Art, and Culture, My Abubakar Ewa, represented by Mr. Dan Akeke, affirmed commitment to a successful festival and highlighted other tourism attractions like Ugep stones and waterfalls.
The Head of Local Government Administration Yakurr LGA, Mrs. Rita Egbe Ayuk, represented by Mr. Ndoma Francis, emphasized the importance of cooperation for a memorable celebration. The Managing Director of the Tourism Bureau, Prince Ojoi Ekpenyong, outlined plans for improved standards and safety, and the collection of visitor data.
Obol Lopon of Ugep and Paramount Ruler of Yakurr, HRM Obol (Dr) Obol Ofem Ubana, praised the festival’s significance for the Yakurr people, celebrating the end of hunger season and expressing optimism for this year’s event. The festival will commence on August 21, 2024, with a commitment to peace and prosperity.
