Nasarawa State Government Takes Steps to Preserve Hippopotamus Population

0

The Nasarawa State Government has embarked on efforts to preserve the population of hippopotamus in the state, aiming to prevent these animals from facing extinction. Dr. Abdullahi Musa, the Director of Veterinary Services in the state’s Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted concerns over the declining hippopotamus population due to activities such as hunting and poaching.

Despite being among the few states in Nigeria where hippopotamuses are found, Nasarawa State has witnessed a reduction in their numbers, with only about 13 hippos remaining in the state. Musa emphasized the importance of preserving these animals, not only for their ecological significance but also for their potential as a tourist attraction.

To address the threats facing hippopotamuses, the state government has implemented various measures, including creating awareness among communities, engaging former hunters as rangers to protect the animals, and cultivating food sources for them. Additionally, plans are underway to establish a games reserve to further safeguard the hippopotamus population and promote tourism.

Despite occasional reports of hippos straying into farms during the rainy season, efforts are being made to mitigate conflicts between farmers and these animals. The government remains committed to ensuring the survival of hippopotamuses in Nasarawa State while harnessing their potential for sustainable tourism development.
