Ogun State Takes Proactive Step Amid Health Worker Exodus

In response to the ongoing wave of resignations, popularly termed “Japa,” within the health sector, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has implemented a special employment procedure. This procedure allows for the immediate replacement of departing health practitioners with qualified personnel without the need for prior government approval.

The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, announced this development during a meeting with the newly elected executive members of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Ogun State Chapter. He highlighted the significance of this policy shift, especially given the acute manpower shortage in government health facilities.

Previously, every employment in the service required the governor’s sanction. However, with this new approval, the health ministry can swiftly fill vacancies created by resignations using internal mechanisms. Mr. Talabi attributed this decision to Governor Abiodun’s commitment to addressing challenges in the health sector and improving the well-being of citizens.

The government’s investment in the health sector is already yielding positive results, with staff turnover across health facilities in the state showing significant improvement. Governor Abiodun’s administration remains dedicated to prioritizing health care and ensuring that the sector has the necessary manpower to deliver quality services to the people of Ogun State.
