Ondo State Partners with Georgetown University to Combat Lassa Fever
Ondo State Government is joining forces with Georgetown University to address the pressing issue of Lassa Fever, a significant public health challenge in the state. The collaboration aims to enhance efforts to curb the spread of the disease and provide comprehensive solutions.
During a reception for the Georgetown University delegation, Hon. Tayo Oluwatuyi, Secretary to the Government of Ondo State, highlighted the severity of Lassa Fever in the state. He emphasized that the state is one of the most affected regions in Nigeria and that the government has been working diligently with various health agencies to mitigate the crisis.
“The moderate success we have achieved so far is due to our commitment to the One Health Approach, which involves strong collaboration among ministries such as Health, Environment, Agriculture, Forestry, Information, and Education,” Oluwatuyi stated. Despite the increasing number of cases, the state has managed to reduce the case fatality rate to below 10% through these efforts.
Governor Aiyedatiwa praised the support from numerous organizations, including the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), UNICEF, WHO, Institute for Human Virology (IHVN), and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). He expressed gratitude for their technical and financial contributions and welcomed the partnership with Georgetown University and its Nigerian subsidiary, the Centre for Global Health Practice and Impact (GU-CGHP).
Governor Aiyedatiwa assured the delegation of the state government’s full support and the cooperation of local staff and citizens. He highlighted the potential for further collaboration, including knowledge transfer and capacity-building programs through scholarships at Georgetown University.
Dr. Winifred Ukponu, head of the Georgetown University team, outlined their approach to tackling Lassa Fever. The team will conduct advocacy, citizen enlightenment, and utilize local innovation networks. Their pilot programs will begin in Owo and Akure South Local Government Areas, which are among the most affected regions in Ondo State.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ikuomola, expressed appreciation for the collaboration and affirmed the government’s readiness to work with Georgetown University to achieve a Lassa Fever-free Ondo State.
