Ondo’s Security Task Force, Army Arrest 12 Illegal Miners

The Ondo State government, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, has intensified its efforts to combat illegal mining, resulting in the recent arrest of 12 individuals involved in illicit activities. The arrests were part of a coordinated operation by the State’s security task force, which has been empowered by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to address the rising challenges of illegal mining and its associated security risks.

The suspects were apprehended during a joint operation in response to credible intelligence aimed at curbing kidnapping activities linked to illegal mining. Senior Special Assistant on Security, Mr. Olugbenga Atiba, provided details of the operation during a press briefing at the 32 Artillery Brigade in Akure. He emphasized that the government is taking proactive measures to prevent the environmental and security threats posed by illegal miners, many of whom are not native to the state.

Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Razaq Obe, outlined the state’s regulatory efforts, stressing the importance of adhering to the Mining Act 2007 while also advocating for a decentralized approach to governance over mining activities. He highlighted the state’s commitment to supporting legitimate miners through education and regular inspections to ensure compliance with environmental and legal standards.

The arrests underscore the state government’s resolve to protect its resources and citizens from the adverse effects of illegal mining while promoting sustainable and lawful mining practices.
