Yobe Government Partners with ACReSAL for Environmental Restoration at Army Base
3,000 Seedlings Planted in Ambitious 20-Hectare Restoration Project
In a significant stride towards environmental sustainability, the Yobe State Government, in collaboration with the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, has launched an ambitious land restoration initiative. The project, which aims to restore 20 hectares of land, was inaugurated within the 233 Battalion, 7 Division of the Nigerian Army in Damaturu, with the planting of over 3,000 seedlings.
The Project Coordinator of ACReSAL, Shehu Alhaji Mohammed, highlighted that this large-scale tree planting effort is a key component of ACReSAL’s strategic approach to land restoration under the ‘Dry Land Management’ segment of the project. He expressed his admiration for the Nigerian Army’s active participation and commitment to nurturing the newly planted trees, which underscores the military’s dedication to promoting environmental sustainability.
“This event is a landmark in our ongoing efforts to protect and preserve our environment. Our partnership with the Nigerian Army in this initiative marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration that will greatly benefit the environment,” said Mr. Mohammed.
To ensure the sustainability of the project, Mr. Mohammed announced the construction of a solar-powered borehole to provide water for the trees after the rainy season. Additionally, a Community Revolving Fund (CRF) loan has been allocated to Barrack farmers to further support the initiative.
Brig. Gen MCE Ejike, Commander of Sector 2 Operation Hadin Kai ACReSAL, commended the project’s proactive approach in addressing environmental challenges such as climate change, soil erosion, and desert encroachment. He emphasized that this collaborative effort would foster a sense of ownership among the soldiers, ensuring the long-term success of the project.
Lt Col. F Abdusalam, Commanding Officer of the 233-7 Div Battalion, assured ACReSAL that the military unit would take excellent care of the trees, recognizing the future benefits of the initiative.
