The Yobe State government has decided to implement a robust regulation strategy by revoking the licences of all private schools in the state. In a meeting with private school proprietors, the State Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Muhammad Sani Idriss, emphasized the need for private institutions to align with state norms and values, ensuring their operations mirror those of public schools.

Dr. Idriss clarified that private schools must adhere to standard procedures and regulations, stressing that operating without a valid licence is unacceptable. He highlighted the intention to streamline the education system, insisting that private schools must re-apply within 30 days to meet set standards for licence renewal.

The Commissioner assured that although licences were cancelled, schools could continue operations for a month and reapply within the stipulated timeframe to acquire new licences. Stressing the importance of compliance, he emphasized that the government has not shut down any school, but unlicensed institutions will be unable to operate.

Moreover, Dr. Idriss outlined the government’s initiative to introduce a dual curriculum in both public and private schools. This policy aims to offer children the option to study the Qur’an and Arabic language or French, promoting bilingualism and cultural diversity, while ensuring flexibility for students to choose according to their interests.
