Yobe State’s Efforts to Combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Among Persons with Special Needs
The Yobe Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, in collaboration with various partners, orchestrated a pivotal event in Damaturu to sensitize Persons with Special Needs on combatting Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Mr. Musa Bala, the Programme Coordinator of the ministry, underscored that this engagement marked part of the global 16 days of activism against GBV, recognized annually from November 25 to December 10 by the United Nations.
The initiative aimed to unite individuals with special needs, enlightening them on methods to protect themselves against GBV within their communities. Mrs. Rebecca Ungawo of Care International highlighted the significance of including people with disabilities in this commemoration, emphasizing their frequent oversight due to their circumstances. She urged for greater involvement and integration of disabled individuals in efforts to curb violence within society. Yawudima Barma, State Secretary of the Association of People Living with Disabilities, urged the government to pass the bill addressing the needs of this segment of the population, advocating for their rights and well-being.
