Your Security, Welfare Guaranteed in Ekiti, Oyebanji Assures People With Disabilities
Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, has assured residents living with disabilities that their security and welfare are top priorities for his administration. Speaking at the 3rd edition of the Southwest Deaf Arts and Culture Festival in Ado Ekiti, Governor Oyebanji, represented by Deputy Governor Chief (Mrs.) Monisade Afuye, emphasized that no individual would face oppression or discrimination due to their disabilities.
The governor highlighted the state’s legislative measures to protect and empower people with disabilities, including laws against molestation and harassment and provisions for social inclusion. He also mentioned the World Bank-supported Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), which provides facilities in special schools to equip those with disabilities with essential skills and education.
“To underscore our commitment to arts and culture, we have transformed the personal house of renowned artist Chief Olowe in Ise Ekiti into a modern museum,” Oyebanji said. “Our administration is dedicated to promoting local crafts and making cultural sites international tourist attractions.”
The event saw Governor Oyebanji and First Lady Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji honored with awards by the Association of the Deaf, which also endorsed the governor for a second term. Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, Prof. Razak Ojo Bakare, pledged ongoing support for the festival, emphasizing the inclusion of the disability community in state events like EKIFEST 2024.
Special Adviser on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Princess Adetoun Agboola, highlighted the festival’s role in showcasing the contributions of the deaf community to the nation’s socio-economic development. She announced a government-organized training for civil servants to learn sign language, promoting effective communication and inclusion.
Southwest Chairman of the Association of the Deaf, Mr. Suleiman Akinremi, praised Governor Oyebanji for his policies that remove socio-economic and political barriers for people with disabilities, enhancing their social inclusion and recognition.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, including the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Habitat Adubiaro, the Ajero of Ijero, Oba Joseph Adebayo Adewole, Chairman of the Ekiti State Association of the Deaf, Mr. William Isaac, and other top government officials, traditional rulers, and community members.
