Zulum Launches Tree Planting in Borno with 10 Million Seedlings
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has initiated the 2024 tree-planting exercise, launching the largest campaign in Nigeria’s history with 10 million assorted seedlings. The ceremony took place in Kawuri Village, Konduga Local Government Area, aiming to combat desertification and environmental degradation.
Addressing the audience, Governor Zulum emphasized his administration’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions through various initiatives, including the procurement of electric vehicles and gas cylinders for community distribution. He also highlighted the establishment of the Agency for the Great Green Wall to tackle desertification and maintain the ecosystem.
“We are committed to protecting Borno’s degrading environment, which has resulted in low rainfall,” Zulum stated, urging stringent measures against illegal tree cutting. He directed the Secretary to the State Government to collaborate with the State House of Assembly to develop more robust environmental laws.
Emet Kiose, the Commissioner for Environment, called on NGOs, clubs, associations, and the public to participate in the tree-planting campaign by collecting seedlings from the State Ministry. The National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) lauded Governor Zulum’s environmental efforts, recognizing Borno as the first state to domesticate the GGW Act and establish a state agency for the initiative.
Saleh Abubakar, Director-General of NAGGW, commended the governor’s environmental achievements, stating, “The Agency is elated and happy to note that Borno is the first state in the country to domesticate the GGW Act by establishing the State Agency and appointing the pioneer Director General.”
The tree-planting campaign is a testament to Governor Zulum’s dedication to addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development in Borno State.
