5th Edition of Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum Promotes Regional Cooperation for Peace and Sustainable Development

The 5th meeting of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum (LCB Governors’ Forum) was successfully held in Maiduguri, Nigeria, from January 29 to 31, 2025. The theme of the meeting, “Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin: Consolidating Gains, Commitment to Peace, Cross-Border Cooperation, Security, and Sustainable Development for a Resilient Community,” centered on reinforcing the region’s commitment to stability and growth. The event was convened by the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) with significant support from the African Union Commission (AUC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The forum was attended by high-level dignitaries, including Nigeria’s President HE Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, represented by Vice President HE Sen Kashim Shettima GCON, along with governors from the Lake Chad Basin region and key representatives from international organizations, including the AUC, UNDP, and the International Support Group (ISG).
Key Achievements and Resolutions:
The forum took note of the tremendous strides made towards stabilization, peacebuilding, and sustainable development in the region. In particular, it celebrated the achievements of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in mitigating terrorist threats and reducing the influence of insurgent groups. The Regional Strategy for Stabilization, Recovery, and Resilience (RS SRR) was recognized for making significant contributions to restoring peace and promoting development across the Lake Chad Basin.
In their resolutions, forum participants committed to the following:
• Strengthening support for the MNJTF to ensure the full neutralization of non-state armed groups operating within the region.
• Intensifying efforts to combat illicit trade and trafficking while bolstering environmental protection and enhancing women’s and youth engagement in regional peace and development initiatives.
• Promoting cross-border trade initiatives, such as the creation of free trade zones, and investing in infrastructure projects to enhance regional connectivity.
• Ensuring sustained funding for stabilization efforts through regional resource mobilization and support from international partners.
The forum also expressed its appreciation to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Government of Yobe State, and all the participants and international partners for their ongoing contributions. The next forum is scheduled to take place in 2026 in Niger.
This meeting served as a critical platform for reaffirming the region’s dedication to a peaceful, resilient future, driven by enhanced cooperation, strategic resource mobilization, and the continued fight against terrorism and instability.
