Engr. Jonathan Ukpebor, the Functioning Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, has announced that the 774 Young Nigerian Scientists Presidential Award (YONSPA) competition is being organized to inspire and encourage science students across Edo State. This initiative is in collaboration with the Edo State Ministry of Education and aims to improve academic performance in both public and private secondary schools within the state.

Speaking at Imaguero College, the designated center for the competition, Engr. Ukpebor shared that the examinations will be conducted across the three senatorial districts in Edo State, ensuring that every Local Government Area is included in the initiative.

YONSPA is an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, providing science students in both public and private secondary schools across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas with an opportunity to compete for scholarships, ranging from Degree to Ph.D. levels, in any federal university in the country. The top-performing science student from each state will represent their state in the National Finals held in Abuja. The competition offers scholarships along with cash prizes for the top three states: N1,000,000 for 1st place, N750,000 for 2nd place, and N500,000 for 3rd place.

In response, Mr. Kenneth Iduseri, a teacher at University Demonstration Secondary School, expressed his gratitude on behalf of the winning school. He praised the opportunity as a valuable one for both public and private school students, emphasizing that it would be put to good use.

This competition represents a significant effort to promote the importance of science education and foster the development of young scientists in Edo State and beyond.
