The Sokoto State Ministry of Animal Health and Fisheries has intensified its anthrax vaccination mop-up exercise in communities bordering Zamfara State, where the disease was recently detected.

Permanent Secretary Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar Yabo urged livestock owners to take advantage of the free vaccination program to prevent the spread of the disease. He emphasized that the state government has mobilized veterinary doctors and animal scientists to ensure a comprehensive vaccination campaign.

“We aim to achieve 95% anthrax vaccination coverage for cattle, sheep, and goats in the state to protect our livestock sector,” Yabo stated.

The Director of Business Services, Dr. Nasiru Abdurrahman, noted that the state government responded swiftly after receiving alerts on anthrax outbreaks in Zamfara and bird flu in Kano.

Thanks to Governor Aliyu’s swift intervention, Sokoto State has received 800,000 doses of anthrax vaccines from the Federal Ministry of Livestock. The ongoing campaign has already covered 95% of the state’s livestock population.

Additionally, the state government is exploring modern livestock production technologies, including artificial insemination techniques. Sokoto recently received a donation of 1,000 high-quality semen doses from Indonesia to enhance dairy and beef production.

The state’s proactive approach to disease prevention and livestock improvement demonstrates its commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector and ensuring food security.
