Sokoto’s 38MW Independent Power Project Nears Completion, Set for Test Run

In a landmark development, the long-awaited 38 Megawatt Independent Power Project (IPP) in Sokoto State is set for a test run as work progresses toward completion.
The Sokoto State Government, under the leadership of Governor Ahmad Aliyu, has made significant strides in reviving this crucial energy project, which had previously stalled. With over N32 billion already invested, the project is now in its final phase, and officials are confident that it will be fully operational within the next six months.
During an inspection visit to the project site, State Commissioner for Energy, Alhaji Sanusi Ibrahim Umar, expressed satisfaction with the level of work done. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the timely completion of the plant, which is expected to play a transformative role in boosting Sokoto’s energy supply and economic development.
“We are on track to successfully deliver this project within the next six months. Once completed, the 38MW plant will contribute additional power to the national grid, benefiting Sokoto and neighboring states like Kebbi and Zamfara,” Commissioner Umar stated.
The IPP project, originally initiated by former Governor Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, had faced setbacks due to vandalism and theft. However, under Governor Aliyu’s administration, efforts have been intensified to rehabilitate and complete the facility.
Project consultant Mr. Theo Ubani emphasized that the plant will significantly enhance industrial activities in Sokoto by providing reliable electricity for manufacturing firms and businesses.
“All the necessary infrastructure, including supply channels for grid connection, has been completed. The final step is the connectivity to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) substation in the state,” Ubani added.
The successful execution of this project is expected to attract investments, support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and create job opportunities, ultimately positioning Sokoto State as an emerging economic powerhouse.
Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s administration remains committed to delivering impactful projects that will uplift the standard of living for residents, and the IPP stands as a testament to this vision.
