Cross River Government Reclaims Green Spaces, Beautifies Calabar for Tourism Growth

As part of its urban renewal and beautification drive, the Cross River State Government has launched an initiative to reclaim and revamp designated Green Areas in Calabar, ensuring the city maintains its reputation as Nigeria’s cleanest and most tourist-friendly destination.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Urban Beautification and Development, Essien Eyo, confirmed that the removal of unauthorized structures and illegal trading activities had commenced, starting with Calabar and set to expand to other major towns across the state.
Governor Senator Bassey Otu approved the exercise, emphasizing the need to restore the state’s aesthetic appeal and reinforce Calabar’s status as a premier tourist hub in West Africa.
The affected Green Areas were originally designed as recreational and relaxation spaces for residents and visitors. However, unauthorized traders and artisans have encroached on these areas, distorting the city’s layout and diminishing its environmental appeal.
“This exercise is not a witch-hunt, but rather an essential move to restore Calabar’s status as a peaceful, secure, and visually appealing city,” Eyo stated. “We are committed to ensuring that our urban spaces reflect our reputation as a top-tier tourism destination in West Africa.”
He reassured displaced traders and artisans that alternative markets and designated spaces had been provided by the government, encouraging them to relocate their businesses accordingly.
Cross River State remains committed to sustainable urban planning, environmental conservation, and tourism development, ensuring that Calabar and other key cities remain attractive for both residents and international visitors.
