In a decisive move to enhance public safety and urban planning, the Lagos State Government has issued a seven-day ultimatum for the removal of illegal structures built under high-tension and power lines across the state.

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) announced the directive via its official X account, stating that the move aims to prevent safety hazards such as electrocution, fire outbreaks, and environmental degradation.

According to a statement signed by Adu Ademuyiwa, Director of Public Affairs at LASBCA, the enforcement is in line with the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, which prohibits construction within power line corridors.

Ensuring Public Safety and Compliance

The General Manager of LASBCA, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, reiterated that buildings within these restricted zones pose significant risks due to the high-voltage electricity carried by power lines. He warned that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe would result in enforcement actions, including demolition and legal sanctions.

He emphasized that past incidents of electrocution and power-related fire outbreaks highlight the need for strict compliance with urban planning laws.

Understanding the Legal Requirements

Under Lagos State regulations, the minimum setback distances for buildings near power lines are as follows:

• 0.415KV lines – 6 metres from the centerline of the conductors

• 11KV lines – 6 metres

• 33KV lines – 10 metres

• 132KV lines – 20 metres

• 330KV lines – 30 metres

• Substations – 12 metres from the property boundary

The Lagos State Government has urged property owners, developers, and residents to voluntarily comply with the directive to avoid penalties.

With this action, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration continues to prioritize public safety, environmental sustainability, and orderly urban development in Lagos.
