Kogi State Leads in Global HIV Prevention Awareness on International Condom Day

Kogi State has reaffirmed its commitment to public health by joining the global community in commemorating International Condom Day, a vital initiative spearheaded by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Nigeria in collaboration with the Kogi State Ministry of Health. The event featured a roadshow and awareness campaign aimed at educating the public on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the importance of condom use in preventing infections and unplanned pregnancies.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Folashade Ayoade, Secretary to the Government of Kogi State, commended the efforts of AHF Nigeria and other stakeholders in championing sexual health education. She emphasized the triple protection benefits of condom use in preventing HIV, STIs, and unintended pregnancies, urging residents to adopt safe health practices.
The Kogi State Coordinator of AHF Nigeria, Dr. Onyeyili Ikemefuna, underscored the significance of International Condom Day, which is globally observed on February 13th. He highlighted the need for widespread public awareness to mitigate the risks associated with STIs and unplanned pregnancies, emphasizing that condoms remain a reliable and accessible preventive measure.
Reinforcing this message, Mr. Steve Aborishade, Advocacy and Marketing Manager at AHF Nigeria, stressed the need to encourage safe practices among young people, particularly in an era where STI prevalence remains a concern. He called for eradicating stigma associated with condom use, promoting open conversations on sexual health.
Dr. Francis Akpa, Director of Public Health at the Kogi State Ministry of Health, lauded AHF Nigeria’s contributions to HIV/AIDS care and awareness across the state. He reiterated the state government’s dedication to improving public health services and ensuring access to necessary protective measures.
The event, held in partnership with the Kogi State Ministry of Education, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and several NGOs, featured an informative health talk on STIs and a demonstration on proper condom use. The initiative aligns with Kogi State’s broader commitment to enhancing public health awareness and promoting safer reproductive health choices.
