Lagos State Government Paves the Way for a Digitally Transformed Auditing Profession

In an inspiring address, Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, emphasized the transformative power of technology in shaping the future of auditing. At the 17th Annual Retreat for Internal Auditors, held at Dover Hotel in Ikeja, Agoro encouraged auditors to embrace the digital age, acquiring essential skills in data analytics, cybersecurity, and digital transformation to maintain their relevance in an evolving landscape.
Agoro highlighted the importance of internal auditors stepping beyond traditional financial audits, becoming strategic advisors within government processes. “Auditors must be equipped to analyze vast amounts of data, identify trends, and assess risks associated with digital transformation,” he said, stressing that the profession must evolve to keep up with technological advancements that are reshaping governance.
Commending the theme of the retreat, “Internal Audit in the Digital Age,” Agoro noted that the shift towards technology-driven governance reflects a broader trend in government processes. He also praised the Office of Internal Audit for organizing the event, which is a vital step towards ensuring that Lagos State remains at the forefront of technological integration.
In her welcoming address, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Internal Audit, Mrs. Kikelomo Arinola Dawodu, echoed Agoro’s sentiments, encouraging auditors to continuously innovate and integrate new technologies into their practices. She emphasized the need for auditors to stay proactive, ensuring integrity and fiscal discipline in government activities.
Hon. Kehinde Joseph, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Alimosho Constituency 2, further underscored the value of the retreat, highlighting the immense knowledge participants would gain to enhance government efficiency and accountability.
Facilitators, including Dr. Adedeji Awobotu, Chief Executive of ADRAC Professional Services Consulting, shared key insights on the opportunities and challenges digital advancements bring to public sector auditing. Awobotu stressed that embracing innovation is essential for auditors to strengthen governance and mitigate financial risks while boosting public trust in government operations.
Reflecting on the potential impact of the retreat, Mr. Taiwo Adekunle, a Deputy Director of Audit in the Office of Infrastructure, expressed his optimism that the valuable knowledge shared would empower auditors to enhance their professional responsibilities in supporting a more transparent and efficient Lagos State.
